Hi, it's Chelsea
I was born in the year 2000 and raised in the Netherlands by a Dutch father and Indonesian mother. I also have a younger brother and we have two lovely dogs who are father and son. Since I was a baby, I've been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel a lot, observe and to be raised in two main cultures. This has given me a love of exploring and reaching beyond the common lives people usually live by.
Early on as a kid, I also discovered the art of figure skating, and I have continued to develop a huge passion for it ever since. For many years I was a single skating competing for the Netherlands at national and international level. Since 2019, I've stepped up my game in this sport and switched to ice dance with a partner. With ice dance so far I've been able to reach things which many years ago I couldn't even dream of. As ice dance team we participated in two world championships so far, one of those was in Japan. It has been a huge dream to compete at a world championships in Japan and it was a crazy emotional moment when that dream came true, against all odds. Ice dance is one of my biggest passions in life and has taught me that dreams come true and that anything is possible, even when you're facing mountains of struggles and the odds aren't in your favour.
My deepest desire for this stage in my life is also to be able to continue my passion in ice dance and to keep improving as ice dance couple. It feels like were far from having reached our ceiling and who knows what sort of things we might still be able to achieve. The biggest struggle is managing the finances. Like many sports or arts or other such passions, funding is a big struggle and often we're not really getting any funding from federations or other organisations. No matter how professional your sport might look, often we're just struggling to even still be able to do it. At the same time, it is a bit like a full-time job, so there's not much else you can do around it. I've had a study loan (during my bachelor study), which is now a huge debt, and I've been having multiple not very stable part-time jobs. We've also done lots of crowdfunding, teaching figure skating and finding all sorts of ways to get some money to continue our sport and passion. Doing all of this next to being a full-time athlete is not ideal, and it actually took its toll for real when I eventually had a burn-out. Therefore, I am extra cautious nowadays and am trying to give my health extra priority.
